“Highlighting how amazing out Australia is through the eyes of a photographer. - Ryan Fowler”

This series began as a want for myself to create something that photographers could enjoy not just because of nice images, but find a sense of inspiration to travel with their camera and showcase the beauty of Australia.

I’d seen a number of series online and on TV that was focussed on the photography & equipment, which had a bit too much “gear talk” to let the destinations shine through. On the flip side, travel shows are wildly popular and feature destinations beautifully, however I’d not see a series that married the two. A series that would educate on the photography while still highlighting a travel destination, and so, Top 5 Photo Locations was born.

It would have been simpler to create a series that just did the travel and photography, after-all, I’d been educating photographers for years already. What this series did need was some commercial value to it, too. Episode 1 was created as the “pilot”, an example of what could be done and the value the series created.

Behind the scenes, and I’ve not shared this information before outside of my own team, there were several pieces of commercial value. First, the travel aspect. Episode 2 partnered with resorts like Tangalooma to elevate the experience of the location, which I know from actual feedback led to multiple groups of novice & amateur photographer going to the resort and following the example set within the video. Part of our partnership was also the ability to license footage that Tangalooma Resort use in their marketing which highlights the best of their experiences. This also has a broader impact on tourism, which leads me to point number two.

Secondly, the target audience for this series was photographers, everyone from the person has just picked up their camera right through to semi-professionals. So what is the impact of this audience? Having been deeply involved with communities of these photographers, I know how much they love to capture images, but more importantly, share them to their social media audiences. They are in the large majority of accounts that sit below 10K followers, however when enough of them band together, visit locations and share their work, this becomes a powerful force of micro-influencers travelling without venues requiring the services of hiring “big name” influencers. They are inspired to travel either by themselves, or in many cases, as groups to these locations to recreate the experiences. Again, I saw this happen with multiple groups then doing the Brisbane Story Bridge climb.
